The Linn Standard Radikal Power Supply is a high-performance motor control and power supply system designed for the Sondek LP12 turntable. It combines a precision-controlled DC motor with sophisticated digital speed management, providing exceptionally accurate and consistent platter rotation.
Designed as a major step up from Linn’s AC motor-based power supplies, Radikal monitors platter speed on every rotation and automatically calibrates the motor when the turntable is switched on. This level of control helps the LP12 maintain precise speed, timing and pitch, allowing the cartridge to extract music from the record groove with greater accuracy.
Precision Motor Control
The motor is fundamental to the performance of any turntable. Variations in rotational speed can affect pitch, timing and musical coherence, making accurate motor control particularly important in a high-performance analogue system.
Radikal replaces the conventional LP12 AC motor with a 13-segment precious-metal brushed DC motor. Its advanced digital control system continuously monitors platter speed and adjusts motor operation to maintain exceptional rotational accuracy.
This precise control helps deliver greater consistency and stability, allowing the LP12 to reproduce music with improved timing, pitch accuracy and musical focus.
Advanced Speed Management
Radikal measures platter speed on every rotation, allowing the system to identify and correct speed variations during operation. It also automatically calibrates the motor when the LP12 is powered on.
This sophisticated approach provides significantly more precise motor management than traditional LP12 power supply designs, helping the platter maintain the correct rotational speed throughout playback.
Radikal supports both 33⅓ rpm and 45 rpm playback, making it suitable for a wide range of vinyl records.
External Power Supply
By moving the motor control and power supply outside the turntable, Radikal provides a cleaner environment for the LP12's sensitive mechanical components.
The external unit houses the power supply and sophisticated motor control electronics, while the precision DC motor is installed within the turntable itself. This approach helps minimise the influence of electrical and mechanical interference on the LP12's delicate analogue playback system.
Designed Specifically for the Sondek LP12
Radikal has been specifically engineered for the Linn Sondek LP12 and integrates closely with the turntable's suspended-chassis architecture.
The Standard Radikal uses an Akurate-style enclosure and provides the same fundamental Radikal motor control technology as the higher-specification Klimax Radikal system, making it an excellent upgrade for LP12 owners seeking improved motor performance and speed accuracy.
