Elac Miracord 70 Turntable
ELAC Miracord 70 is a beautifully designed turntable that will get the best out of your vinyl collection
The solid MDF plinth with a high-gloss black fi nish provides a strong foundation. A belt-driven sub-platter,powered by an extremely smooth synchronous motor by Premotec, supports the 2.6 kg platter made of glass. A black ceramic coating on the underside of the platter gives it a dark translucent appearance that accentuates its three-dimensional form. Combined with a point mounting system that uses a ceramic ball as a central element, like the one on the ELAC Miracord 90, the overall structure ensures exceptionally smooth running and outstanding immunity to external influences.
ELAC’s Miracord 70 has an illustrious line of forebears, as it is rumoured that ELAC, along with Perpetuum Ebner and Dual, accounted for 90% of the world’s supply of turntables in the mid 1950s. ELAC actually re-started its turntable production two years ago with the Miracord 90, which it named in honour of the company’s 90th anniversary. The Miracord 70 turntable celebrates a different anniversary, this time the deck marking 70 years since the first ELAC turntable, the PW1 autochanger, rolled off the production line.
An important feature of the Miracord 70 is the in-house designed tonearm. This is J-shaped and has a lovely retro appearance. Fortunately, its engineering is bang up to date, being based around a carefully selected mixture of aluminium and steel materials, said by the company to optimise its resonant behaviour. The arm also features multiple electrical grounding points to help combat unwanted noise and hum.
The Miracord 70’s bass performance is certainly a standout. In short, the Miracord has a very clean, detailed and extended low end, but is also tight and focused with no overhang, wallow or bloat. Also across the midrange, the Miracord 70 is both fluid and detailed.
The other thing that is very obvious from listening to the package as a whole is the fine sense of precision within the soundstage – usually the preserve of more costly designs. The Miracord 70 set up a very solid and well-defined image between the loudspeakers that extended nicely behind the speaker plane as well. This is a superb-sounding, ready to play turntable package that is sure to cause a stir at its price point. Its excellent build and finish is complemented by its sophisticated bass performance.
